Sanitation field assistant Ramesh Yadav threatened to immolate himself and his family in front of the GHMC head office in Tank Bund Road.
Yadav, who was in the job for 15 years, alleged that the assistant medical officer for health, Uma Gouri had conspired to sack him as he had refused to pay her a monthly bribe of Rs. 6,000. He alleged that Uma Gauri was harassing him to pay the money and when he refused, he was removed from his job.
On Saturday afternoon, Yadav came to the GHMC headquarters with his family and doused himself with fuel. He started raising slogans against officials when the security personnel overpowered him.
When contacted, Uma Gouri said Yadav had been withdrawing wages of a dead colleague, Anantamma, whose death had not been reported to the GHMC. When officials launched an inquiry, Anantamma's son said Yadav had borrowed Rs. 50,000 from his mother. When Anantamma died, Yadav promised to provide a job to her son or his wife. Instead, Yadav replaced Anantamma with his relatives. Anantamma's son then contacted GHMC officials. Yadav's service was terminated due to his misconduct, said the GHMC.
