Amara Raja Batteries to set up Telangana’s first gigafactory in Mahbubnagar

Hyderabad: Amara Raja Batteries Limited (ARBL), a leading Indian industrial and automotive battery company, held a ground-breaking ceremony on Saturday for Telangana’s first gigafactory in the Mahbubnagar district.

The event was attended by state industries minister K.T. Rama Rao, minister of Prohibition and Excise V. Srinivas Goud, founder of Amara Raja Group Dr. Ramachandra N. Galla, and chairman and managing director of ARBL Jayadev Galla among others.

The manufacturing unit, named Amara Raja Giga Corridor, will produce lithium cell and battery packs with an ultimate capacity of up to 16GWh and up to 5GWh, respectively, making it one of India’s largest facilities of its kind. The facility aims to create direct employment for about 4,500 people and a similar number of indirect jobs, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the region.

The ground-breaking ceremony also marked the launch of the first-of-its-kind advanced energy research and innovation centre, named the Amara Raja E +Ve Energy Labs. This facility will cater to the development needs of Amara Raja as well as provide a range of facilities open to other players in the energy and mobility ecosystem.

On the occasion, ARBL chairman Jayadev Galla expressed his enthusiasm for the company’s and the state’s first lithium cell and battery pack manufacturing unit. “The bhoomi pooja marks a significant milestone in our journey, and our strategic step is not just limited to setting up the Giga Corridor but to providing non-migratory jobs to the local youth. We are grateful to the Telangana government for its tremendous support in this endeavour.”

Congratulating the company on the ground-breaking ceremony, minister K.T. Rama Rao said, “Electric mobility remains a focus area for the Telangana government, and we are committed to developing the right infrastructure and ecosystem for the promotion and adoption of EVs. Telangana has been a frontrunner in adopting sustainability, and it is a proud moment for the state to celebrate the ground-breaking ceremony of Amara Raja Batteries’ first lithium cell and battery pack manufacturing facility.”

With the launch of the Amara Raja Giga Corridor and the Amara Raja E +Ve Energy Labs, Amara Raja aims to be at the forefront of India’s energy transition and introduce new technologies to the market.
