Animal lovers turn up in large numbers to adopt puppies at JVR Park in Banjara Hills
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) successfully hosted an Indie Dog Puppy Adoption Drive at Jalagam Vengal Rao (JVR) Park, Banjara Hills, on Sunday morning.
The event, held from 6 am to 10 am, drew families, animal lovers and activists who came forward to adopt healthy, vaccinated and dewormed Indie puppies.
Puppies find homes
āThe response was encouraging. Each adoption means one less puppy on the streets and one more family enriched with companionship,ā said Dr Sharul Kaizan, Hyderabad-based veterinarian, speaking to NewsMeter.

Citizens welcome the initiative
Attendees shared that the drive helped highlight the value of Indie dogs, who are often overlooked.
Mehul Sharma, who adopted a two-month-old pup, said, āI came here thinking of just checking the drive out, but I couldnāt resist. Indies are strong, friendly, and perfect for Indian homes. Iām glad GHMC did this.ā

Animal activists also praised the step
Saisha Nair, a Hyderabad-based rescuer, noted, āEvents like this donāt just find homes for animals, they also change mindsets. When people see families happily taking home Indies, it challenges the obsession with expensive breeds.ā

Street dog management in focus
The initiative comes amid ongoing debates about managing street dogs in urban India.

In recent observations, the Supreme Court stressed that local bodies must control dog populations through sterilisation and adoption, rather than removal or harm. Hyderabad, like many metros, continues to face challenges balancing citizen safety with animal welfare.

More than just adoptions
Volunteers present at the drive shared that the event created awareness as much as it facilitated adoptions.
āEven for those who didnāt take a puppy home, the message was clear, Indies deserve respect and a chance at family life,ā said Sangeetha Reddy, a volunteer with Streetcause PAW, an animal-based division of the NGO.
