The customary auction, an interesting feature of the Ganesh Utsav, is held every year before the Balapur Ganesh is taken in a huge procession to Hussainsagar lake for immersion. The successful bidders of the 21 kg laddu were Ramesh Yadav, MLC of Kadapa district, and Marri Shashank Reddy of Nadhargul.
Similar auctions of laddus were also conducted at Ganesh temples in other localities but the Balapur laddu is the most special one. Many people, including prominent politicians and businessmen, participated in the auction at Balapur.
In 2019, the Balapur laddu had been auctioned for Rs. 17.60 lakh and in 2020 there was no auction due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tradition of the laddu auction began in 1994. Kolan Krishna Reddy, a native of Balapur village, was the successful bidder that year, bagging it for Rs. 450. Interestingly, the same family has participated in most of the auctions and registered success in nine of the total 26 auctions held thus far.
The laddu fetched a record Rs. 17.60 lakh in 2019. The bidder was Kolan Ram Reddy, a local Balapur resident. Till 2002, the laddu was fetching around Rs. 1.05 lakh.
The amount received from the auction is utilized for temple and other developmental works in Balapur.
