Hyderabad: A resident of Banjara Hills faced a penalty of Rs 10,000 for using drinking water supplied by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to wash his car.
The action was taken after the Water Board Managing Director, Ashok Reddy, witnessed the misuse during an inspection on Tuesday.
Violation spotted during routine visit
According to officials, the MD was travelling through Road No. 12 in Banjara Hills when he noticed the individual cleaning his vehicle using potable municipal water. Shocked by the disregard for water usage guidelines, he immediately intervened.
Ashok Reddy directed the area manager to issue a notice to the violator and impose a fine. Following his orders, officials levied a penalty of Rs 10,000 on the spot.
Strict message to citizens
The MD emphasised that drinking water is meant for essential household needs and must not be used for non-essential purposes such as gardening, driveway washing, or vehicle cleaning.
He appealed to citizens to act responsibly, especially at a time when urban regions face increasing water demand. “Potable water must be conserved. Misuse will not be tolerated, and violators will face strict action,” he said.
Warning of further action
Ashok Reddy reiterated that the Water Board will continue monitoring such violations and enforce penalties wherever necessary. Residents have been advised to report misuse and comply with responsible water usage guidelines.
