Banned Chinese manjha nearly kills Hyderabad youth; Old City police seize 24 bobbins

Hyderabad: A banned Chinese manjha nearly claimed the life of a bike rider after it sliced his throat and left him with 22 stitches.

The incident once again exposed the deadly consequences of its continued illegal use in the city.

The youth identified as Jameel, a resident of the Nawab Saheb Kunta area, was seriously injured when a Chinese manjha struck his neck while he was travelling on a bike in the Shamsheergunj area.

The sharp kite string slit his throat, causing grievous injuries. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment, where doctors said his condition is critical.

Critical injury, narrow escape

According to the youth’s family, the incident occurred when the sharp, glass-coated nylon string brushed across the youth’s neck while he was outdoors. The injury proved critical, and doctors had to administer 22 stitches to save his life.

The family said the child survived after a tense medical struggle.

No complaint, have faith in the police: Family

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the family has not lodged a formal police complaint.

The youth’s parents said the police are already performing their duties sincerely and acknowledged ongoing action against those involved in the illegal manufacture and sale of Chinese manjha.

Warnings repeated, violations continue

The parent pointed out that political leaders have repeatedly cautioned against the use of Chinese manjha, including Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP, who has issued several warnings on the dangers posed by the banned kite string.

However, the parents lamented that illegal manufacture and sale continue despite repeated advisories and enforcement drives.

‘Today my child, tomorrow yours’

Making an emotional appeal, the parent said the real responsibility lies with those who purchase Chinese manjha, as demand fuels illegal production.

“Today it was my child’s neck. Tomorrow it could be yours. Your children also walk on the same roads,” he warned, calling the trade unlawful and morally unacceptable.

Appeal for stricter laws

The parents urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and elected representatives to introduce stricter laws, including severe punishment for anyone found flying kites using Chinese manjha within city limits. They also suggested restricting kite flying to open, non-residential areas away from busy roads if permitted at all.

Cash reward to stamp out illegal Chinese manjha in Khairatabad

After coming to know about the incident, Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender has announced a Rs 5,000 reward for information on the sale of banned Chinese manjha.

He warned that Chinese manjha poses danger to humans and birds and will not be tolerated in the constituency.

Anyone found selling it will face criminal charges. Identities of the people who provide valuable tips will be kept confidential, and the informer will receive Rs 5,000 cash, he said.

Police seize banned manjha in Old City

Meanwhile, police in Hyderabad’s Old City stepped up enforcement against the banned string.

Acting on the directions of senior officers, Chatrinaka police conducted special checks on December 27 and 28, catching individuals illegally selling Chinese synthetic nylon glass-coated manjha and seizing 24 bobbins.

Cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Environmental Protection Act, and further legal action is underway.

Public advisory

Police reiterated that Chinese manjha is completely banned as it poses a serious threat to human lives, particularly children, as well as birds, animals, and the environment.

Citizens have been urged not to buy, sell or use the banned string and to immediately inform the police if they come across its illegal sale.

Authorities warned that strict action will be taken against violators, stressing that public cooperation and zero tolerance are essential to prevent further tragedies.
