Beware of cyber scammers impersonating CMO officials, promising govt contracts for money
Hyderabad: In a concerning development, cyber scammers are targeting business owners across Telangana by impersonating officials from the Chief Ministerās Office (CMO).
The scammers are reportedly sending fake emails and WhatsApp messages, claiming to offer government contracts and demanding money in return.
The issue came to light after Ajit Reddy, special secretary to chief minister A Revanth Reddy, lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Police. The complaint stated that messages were being sent using the name of the CMās Officer on Special Duty (OSD), falsely promising government-related support or contracts.
Scammers falsely promising to secure government tenders and contracts
āThese fraudsters are using the names of senior officials to gain the trust of business owners and extort money. The messages appear professional and convincing,ā a senior cybercrime official said. The scammers reportedly assured assistance in securing government tenders and contracts, luring victims into transferring funds.
Based on the complaint, police have registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the origin of the fraudulent messages. Preliminary findings suggest the involvement of an organised racket operating behind the scenes.
Remain vigilant, business owners told
The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has urged business owners to remain vigilant and avoid responding to any suspicious communication claiming to be from the CMO. Authorities clarified that official government communication is never conducted through personal messaging platforms or unofficial email accounts, and any such interactions demanding money should be treated as fraudulent.
Officials have appealed to the public to immediately report any such attempts to the nearest police station or cybercrime unit. A full-fledged investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
