Hyderabad: Next time, you block a ‘Free-Left’ lane at a junction, beware, as police might be watching.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police have booked 9,142 motorists in just 12 days for blocking the ‘Free-Left’ lanes at key city junctions.

Free-Left lanes are meant to ease congestion

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D Joel Davis, IPS, said that free-left turns are designed to allow vehicles to turn left at junctions without waiting for the traffic signal, thereby ensuring smoother vehicular movement and reducing pressure on signal cycles.

However, officials observed that motorists frequently stop or queue in these designated lanes, obstructing the free flow of traffic.

Such violations not only inconvenience rule-abiding drivers but also contribute to avoidable traffic jams and increase the risk of road accidents.

12-day special enforcement drive

“The special drive was conducted from February 9 to 20 across major junctions in the city. Traffic personnel intensified surveillance and field inspections, focusing specifically on free-left obstructions,” Joel Davis said.

During this period, a total of 9,142 cases were registered against violators under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, and fines were imposed accordingly.

He also made it clear that the drive will continue, and strict action will be taken against motorists who block free-left passages.

Awareness campaign alongside action

Apart from enforcement, the department has been creating awareness among motorists about responsible driving practices.

Campaigns are being carried out through official social media platforms to educate road users on the importance of keeping free-left lanes clear for smoother traffic management.
