GHMC Responds to Food Safety Complaint
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) responded to a complaint on social media regarding the incident, assuring the public that the food safety team had been alerted. GHMCās official account replied, āDear citizen, The Concerned Food Safety team @AFCGHMC have been alerted on this issue and the same will be resolved at the earliest.ā
āFurther, several such complaints are regularly reported against such local eateries. There is a growing necessity for large-scale food safety inspections in the Malkajgiri constituency,ā said Robin Zaccheus, social activist.
Previous Cases Underscore Urgent Need for Action
Green Bawarchi is not an isolated case. Hyderabad has seen multiple food poisoning cases this year, many of which have raised serious concerns about public health and food safety standards.
Earlier this month, a tragic incident occurred at Grill Nine Multi-Cuisine Restaurant in Nirmal, where a 19-year-old girl, Phool Kali Baiga, died, and 11 others fell ill after eating dishes such as Chicken Fried Rice and Tandoori Chicken.
Seven other individuals who dined at the same restaurant were also hospitalized with similar symptoms.
Since January, at least ten food poisoning incidents have been reported in Hyderabad, leading to over 200 hospitalizations. Among these cases, Grill House in Alwal faced scrutiny after being linked to two separate food poisoning incidents this year, both involving their shawarma.
Other notable incidents linked to shawarma vendors include cases from Charminar, SR Nagar, and Madhapur, where customers reported severe symptoms after consumption.
These incidents have heightened concerns about the sanitary practices of street food vendors and have spurred demands for regular inspections.
Calls for Routine Inspections and Stringent Food Safety Measures
Amid a rise in foodborne illness cases, Hyderabad residents and health advocates are urging the GHMC and Telangana Food Safety Department to implement stricter measures to ensure food safety.
Routine inspections, hygiene standards, and increased accountability for eateries are among the suggestions from community activists and citizens.
Robin Zaccheus emphasized the need for consistent regulatory oversight, adding, āThe recurrence of food poisoning cases across multiple eateries points to a systemic issue that requires thorough inspections and sustained attention.ā
Following the food poisoning case at Green Bawarchi in Neredmet, GHMC has launched an investigation into the establishment. More details are awaited.
