Caller posing as Reliance Capital agent cheats Hyderabad employee of Rs 2 lakhs

Hyderabad: A 51-year-old private employee from Hyderabad was duped of more than Rs 2 lakhs by an unknown caller pretending to be an employee of Reliance Capital processing a loan application.
Case details
The private employee applied for a personal loan from Reliance Capital. Afterwards, he received a WhatsApp call from someone claiming to be a Reliance Capital executive.
Promising to complete the loan process over the phone, the caller asked for the victimās Aadhaar card, PAN card, and bank statement which were shared with him. The victim was also sent a letter stating that he was eligible for a loan.
Then the caller asked the victim to pay mandatory insurance fees.
Subsequently, the scammer called several times, requesting payments for various charges naming procedures such as GST, processing fees, TDS tax charges, loan completion charges, withdrawal activation charges and late payment fees. In total, the victim paid Rs 2,10,559 to the callerās bank accounts.
After realising that he had been duped, the victim filed a complaint seeking help. A case has been registered.
Public advisory
- Always download apps from official websites and play stores not from unknown sources.
- Apply for loans only through applications related to Non-Banking Financial Corporation (NBFC) or an authorized bank.
- Fake loan apps promise fast cash but are also deceptive. Stay alert and be vigilant!
- Always check whether the lender is approved by the RBI and/or is associated with a financial institution.
- Always check the terms and conditions of lending, the genuineness of their website, physical office locations, Company Identification Number (CIN) and the Certificate of Registration (COR).
- Check the app permission(s) and the access it seeks, such as contacts, gallery etc. Give access to those permissions which are absolutely required by the application.
