Car crashes into Hyderabad’s new cycling track in Narsingi; cyclists flag safety issues
The incident raises concerns about cyclist safety despite having a dedicated track, emphasising the need for increased caution among all road users

Fortunately, no one was injured as no cyclists were present at the time on the track. The track and the solar structure were not damaged. However, the speed of the vehicle was enough to damage the road and the curb.
The incident at Narsingi raises concerns about cyclist safety despite having a dedicated track, emphasising the need for increased caution among all road users.
Cyclists often rely on dedicated tracks for a safer riding experience. Hyderabad, like many cities, has invested in cycling infrastructure to encourage eco-friendly commuting and recreational cycling. However, accidents on these tracks underscore the persistent challenges faced by cyclists, even in supposedly secure environments.
Causes of bicycle accidents
The collision on Thursday morning prompts a reflection on the common causes of bicycle accidents.
Ritu, a regular cyclist, shares her concern saying, “Having a dedicated track is great, but it doesn’t guarantee safety. We need better awareness and respect from other road users. In the collision between a cyclist and a larger faster vehicle, the cyclist is often at a disadvantage.”
Common causes of bicycle accidents involving other vehicles include a vehicle cutting off a bike, rear-end collisions when manoeuvring around parked cars, and doors opening into the cyclist’s path. However, non-vehicle-related incidents, such as collisions with objects, pedestrians, or other cyclists, also contribute to the overall risk.
Challenges faced by cyclists
Cyclists encounter numerous challenges even on dedicated tracks. Poorly maintained roads, debris, and unexpected obstacles pose threats.
“Hyderabad’s cycling community faces additional challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions and insufficient awareness among other road users,” said Ritu.
Demands and concerns
In response to these challenges, cyclists demand increased safety measures. This includes regular maintenance of cycling tracks, better signage, and awareness campaigns to educate all road users about sharing the road responsibly.
Amit, who commutes daily on his bicycle, highlights the need for infrastructure improvement. “The cycling track is a good start, but it needs better maintenance. Potholes and debris can be dangerous, especially during high-speed rides,” he said.
Sara Powell a member of the Hyderabad Cycling association emphasised the importance of road safety education. “There should be awareness programs for both cyclists and drivers. Mutual understanding is crucial for everyone’s safety on the road.”
