Hyderabad: In a major crackdown on distracted driving, the Hyderabad Traffic Police booked over 6,000 motorists for using mobile phones while driving during a week-long enforcement drive held from April 3 to 9.

The initiative was aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidents caused by negligence.

Bikers are majority of violators

During the special drive, officials registered a total of 6,046 cases. A majority of the violators were two-wheeler riders. Here’s a breakdown of the cases:

- 5,810 two-wheeler riders

- 51 three-wheeler drivers

- 185 four-wheeler and other vehicle drivers

The data indicates that mobile phone usage while riding remains highly prevalent, especially among bikers.

Dangerous impact of distracted driving

Traffic officials highlighted that using a mobile phone while driving is a serious offence that poses a major threat to road safety. It leads to multiple forms of distraction, including:

- Loss of concentration

- Reduced reaction time

- Poor decision-making

Even a brief moment of distraction can result in accidents, endangering the driver, passengers, and pedestrians.

Legal action against violators

Authorities stated that all offenders will be produced before the court, and charge sheets will be filed. Penalties will be imposed as per the law.

Zero-tolerance policy to continue

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D Joel Davis, IPS, said that the department is following a zero-tolerance policy against mobile phone usage while driving. He added that such enforcement drives will continue regularly.

Public advised to follow rules

The Jt. CP urged citizens to strictly follow traffic rules and avoid using mobile phones while driving. Motorists have been advised to prioritise safety for themselves and others on the road.

The drive reflects the authorities’ continued efforts to curb unsafe driving practices and ensure safer roads in Hyderabad, he added.
