CBI arrests Hyd-based MIDHANI officials, scrap dealers for metal theft

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested seven people, including two scrap dealers of a Hyderabad-based private company and the assistant general manager of Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd. (MIDHANI), for attempting to divert expensive materials from MIDHANI to the godown of scrap dealers.

An assistant commandant and a constable of the Telangana State Special Protection Force (SSPF), Hyderabad, and two casual employees of MIDHANI were also among those arrested. The CBI has registered a case against two scrap merchants of Hyderabad-based private firms and others.

It was alleged that the accused scrap dealers entered into a "conspiracy" with others, including temporary and casual employees of MIDHANI and Telangana State Special Protection Force officers, to divert valuable raw, finished, and semi-finished materials in a clandestine manner from MIDHANI, Hyderabad, to the godown of the scrap dealers. It was further alleged that the scrap merchants agreed to pay illegal gratification to the temporary/casual employees and other public servants. On 3 June, the CBI intercepted a vehicle that was transferring 950 kg of precious material and caught two scrap merchants who were stealing the precious metal scrap along with two temporary employees of MIDHANI.

Searches were conducted at six locations in Hyderabad at MIDHANI and other premises of the accused which led to the recovery of incriminating documents and mobile phones containing incriminating evidence, including details of payments made by the scrap merchants to the temporary employees of MIDHANI and some officials of the company.

All the arrested persons will be produced before the court.
