Choutuppal cops bust thieves targetting buses; Rs 1.26 cr gold seized

Hyderabad: The Choutuppal police officials nabbed a person accused of committing theft of gold being taken in a bus between Mumbai and Andhra Pradesh. The police seized 1,832 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 1.26 crores from his possession.

The police registered a case and named two others as accused. The arrested accused has been identified as Sony Thakur (22). The other two, Ali Khan and Aslam, are absconding. All are natives of Madhya Pradesh.

A breakdown of the assets seized listed one haram and 17 necklaces weighing 1,000 grams, 35 black bead chains weighing 832 grams. The total worth is Rs 1,26,88,432.

Case details

According to the police, in July, the police received a complaint from a Mumbai resident who is in the gold business that he gave gold ornaments (30 pieces of black beads weighing 609.250 grams; a necklace weighing 20.380 grams; 7 pieces of black beads weighing 125.40 grams; 30 pieces of black beads weighing 358.430 grams; and a haram with 10 pieces and a necklace with 6 pieces weighing a total of 987 grams, making a total weight of approximately 2.1 kg) to his employee Purohith Bharath Kumar.

The complainant got his employee into an Orange Travels bus at the Chunaabatti bus stop to deliver the gold items to his AD Jewelleries branch in Andhra Pradesh. At Dharmojigudem, Bharath left the bag containing the gold ornaments on the bus and got down to get tea. After 20 minutes, when he returned and checked the bag, he found the gold ornaments missing.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered and the police started the investigation.

Accused keep track of gold movement between States

The police said that the accused belonged to a group of people who knew about the transport of gold from Mumbai to other states. They follow such persons who carry and ship the gold for delivery and when the bus halts for lunch, breakfast or dinner they enter the bus and steal the bag.

After committing the offence, they escape using fake number plates for their vehicles. Mainly Orange Travel buses are their targets.
