Hyderabad: A 30- year-old woman allegedly killed her two minor daughters before ending her life at Ramnagar area of Choutuppal in Yadadri Bhongir district on Thursday. Her three-year-old daughter Shainy miraculously survived.
The deceased has been identified as Turpunuri Umarani. Her two daughters were identified as Harini, 12, and Lasya, 8. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the woman could have taken the extreme step due to financial hardships and harassment by her husband Venkatesh.
"A case has been registered. Police are probing it from all angles," said Bhongir DCP K Narayana Reddy.
"We are verifying if there were any issues between the couple, which could have forced her to take this step. No suicide note was found," police said.
Umarani and Venkatesh were married for 14 years and lived in Ramnagar. Venkatesh's brothers also reside in adjoining houses in the same locality.
Venkatesh slept in the open area outside the house and Umarani along with the children went to sleep inside the house. However, on Thursday morning Venkatesh woke up to the cries of their youngest daughter Shainy. He tried to open the door but in vain. He then broke open the door with the help of other family members to find his wife and three daughters hanging from an iron beam. Umarani and two girls were already dead, while Shainy was fighting for her life.
Police suspect that Umarani and Shainy were hanged from the same beam on both sides. Umarani's body was lowered while Shainy was pulled up close to the roof. She managed to place her legs on an overhead storage compartment and survived.
A case of abetment to suicide and harassment has been registered against her husband. This followed a complaint by Umarani's brother that she took the extreme step because of Venkatesh's harrassment.
