Clean & Green: RGIA launches EV charging, bio-diesel filling stations

Hyderabad: The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) launched two sustainable initiativesā€”an Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station at the main car parking area and a bio-diesel filling station at the public transportation centre.

The fast-charging station is accessible to all EV users who wish to avail of the service. With 30 KW, it can charge a four-wheeler from empty to full in about an hour. The charging station is app-based and compatible for use through Android and IOS mobile devices.

The airport authorities said they hope the presence of the EV station will encourages the use of electric vehicles and make the airport an enabler of clean energy. With this initiative, the airport also aims to prevent pollution and maintain the optimum level of ambient noise around the airport. Further, RGIA aims to improve the Air Quality Index (AQI) of the airport.

Bio-diesel filling station

RGIA is the first Indian airport to introduce a new bio-diesel filling station. With this, the airport authorities expect to reduce the risk of global warming and greenhouse effect as there will be no emission of hazardous gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and sulphur oxide (SO). They also said it improves the engine life of vehicles.

Pradeep Panicker, the CEO of GMR Group that runs RGIA, said, "We, at GMR Hyderabad International Airport, are committed to operating our airport in a sustainable and environment-friendly manner. We have adopted multiple initiatives in collaboration with all our stakeholders to achieve not only carbon neutrality but also to optimise the use of natural resources around the airport ecosystem. We aim to be a zero-carbon emission airport and will continue to adopt various eco-friendly measures. Sustainable fuel plays a significant role in reducing emissions and the availability to deliver such fuel solutions will accelerate our efforts in conserving the environment in and around the airport."

Previously, RGIA had employed a host of environment-focused initiatives aimed at optimising the use of natural resources, including green buildings, clean energy, carbon emissions control, recycling, water conservation, rainwater harvesting, commissioning solar power plants, cloud-based irrigation control systems, to name a few.
