CM Cup vs Khelo India: Telangana officials, BJP debate merits of each event

Hyderabad: The CM Cup and Khelo India, two highly anticipated sporting competitions in India, have come under scrutiny as officials from Telangana shed light on their contrasting characteristics and approaches. While both events aim to showcase the incredible talent of young athletes, how they are organised and the level of inclusivity they offer present significant differences.

Speaking to NewsMeter about the fundamental qualities of Khelo India, N.V. Subhash, the official spokesperson for the Telangana BJP, said, “Khelo India, organised in every Parliament constituency, surpasses all barriers of caste, creed, religion, political affiliation, or region. It is a unique and welcoming opportunity for individuals to be recognised and honoured in various sports, encompassing a wide range of disciplines.”

Mr. Subhash highlighted the overwhelming response received by Khelo India, with expressions of interest from nearly 20,000 people, irrespective of their party, community, or regional affiliations. “This remarkable participation showcases the inclusive vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who aims to represent and serve all citizens, regardless of their backgrounds.”

Meanwhile, Krishank Manne, chairman of TSMDC, praised Telangana’s approach to organising sporting events, with a strong focus on grassroots development and collaboration. “In Telangana, we have witnessed a commendable approach towards organising sporting events, starting from the grassroots level up to the state level,” Mr. Krishank explained.

He highlighted the nurturing of talent in various sports, beginning at the village and district levels and progressing upwards. He said, “The involvement of officials and elected representatives, including ministers, has played a vital role in promoting young athletes across different constituencies. Additionally, we have allocated funds for sports development and received voluntary support and sponsorship from influential individuals, including politicians and community leaders.”

The chairman of TSMDC also pointed out the importance of collaboration with sports federations, state governments, and various organisations to ensure the effectiveness of such programmes. “Randomly organising events without proper coordination and mentorship does not serve the intended purpose,” Mr. Krishank argued.

He emphasised the need to organise events in collaboration with established federations and associations such as the Olympic Association, Sports School Federations, Stadium Federations, and the Telangana Boxing Association. Mr. Krishank highlighted the role of these associations and bodies in mentoring and training students, enabling the identification and development of talented athletes.

He concluded by questioning, “How are the sports events being organised and how are participants selected? Are they organised in collaboration with state governments, federations, and various organisations, or is it simply a political programme?”

As the debate continues, the contrasting approaches of the CM Cup and Khelo India are being brought into focus. While Khelo India prides itself on its inclusive nature and nationwide outreach, Telangana officials emphasise the significance of grassroots development, collaboration with federations and associations, and the avoidance of political influence in sporting events.
