Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has inaugurated six new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), including a major facility in Amberpet.

Reddy also laid the foundation stone for 39 more across the Outer Ring Road (ORR) region.

The newly launched projects are part of the state’s ambitious plan to ensure 100% sewage treatment in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits and adjoining urban local bodies (ULBs).

City Sewerage at a Glance

Sewerage pipeline network: 10,753 km

Manholes in GHMC limits: 6.14 lakh

Sewage generation in GHMC: 1950 MLD

Existing STPs (2008–09): 25 units with 772 MLD capacity

Progress in GHMC Area

Between 2022 and 2025, the government initiated construction of 20 new STPs with a capacity of 1106 MLD.

2 STPs (22 MLD) completed in Nov 2023.

15 STPs (970.5 MLD) completed after Dec 2023.

With the old and new plants, Hyderabad now has 42 STPs (1764.8 MLD).

By Oct 2025, another 3 STPs (113.5 MLD) will be ready, taking the total to 45 STPs with 1878 MLD capacity, meeting 100% of sewage treatment needs within GHMC.

39 STPs for ORR Region

To cater to the fast-growing ORR municipalities, the government has cleared 39 new STPs with a capacity of 972 MLD under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme.

Cost: Rs 3,849.10 crore

Completion target: 2026

Once operational, Hyderabad’s overall treatment capacity will reach 2850 MLD, enough to meet sewage projections up to 2036 (2800 MLD).

To prevent untreated waste from entering the Musi River, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for laying trunk lines has been prepared at an estimated cost of Rs 4700 crore.

Musi River Protection Works

The Musi River remains a key focus area:

NRCD Phase I (2008–09): 592 MLD (Amberpet, Nagole, Nallacheruvu, Attapur).

Ongoing projects (2024–25): 723 MLD (new units at Amberpet, Nagole, Nallacheruvu, Attapur).

Current capacity along Musi: 1315 MLD

Planned additions: 234 MLD

Projected by 2027: 1549 MLD

Long-Term Vision

The government has set a target of 100% sewage treatment across GHMC and ORR by 2026. The expanded network of STPs will help prevent pollution in the Musi River and city lakes while ensuring sustainable urban growth.
