Cold wave sweeps Telangana; mercury dips to 8.4°C in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Severe cold wave-like conditions prevailed across Telangana over the last 24 hours, with several districts recording minimum temperatures in single digits.

According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), Hyderabad and its surrounding regions saw temperatures fall sharply between Sunday evening and the early hours of Monday.

Hyderabad records 8.4°C at HCU-SERILINGAMPALLY

The lowest minimum temperature in the city, 8.4°C, was reported at the Hyderabad Central University station in Serilingampally. Other parts of Hyderabad also witnessed a significant dip:

• Rajendranagar: 10.1°C

• Alwal: 10.6°C

• BHEL: 10.6°C

• RC Puram: 12.2°C

• Neredmet: 12.4°C

• Chandanagar: 12.4°C

Meteorologist K. S. Sridhar speaking to NewsMeter said, “These drops are part of a typical winter pattern, but the persistence of single-digit temperatures across multiple stations is unusual for early December.”

Single-digit temperatures hit northern Telangana

Several districts reported even lower temperatures than the capital. Minimum temperatures ranged between 6.6°C and 10°C at multiple locations.

Districts that recorded the lowest include:

• Sangareddy: 6.6°C

• Kumram Bheem Asifabad: 6.6°C

• Adilabad: 6.8°C

• Vikarabad: 7.8°C

• Kamareddy: 8.2°C

• Nizamabad: 8.4°C

• Nirmal: 9°C

“Cold, dry northerly winds following recent weather systems are contributing to this sharp fall. The drop is expected to continue for the next few days,” said Sridhar.

IMD: Temperatures to remain below normal for 2–3 days

The IMD-Hyderabad forecast indicates that minimum temperatures are likely to remain 3°C to 4°C below normal at isolated pockets across the state for the next two to three days.

According to the department’s projections:

• Adilabad, Kamareddy, Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Medak, and Nirmal may see temperatures between 5°C and 11°C.

• In other districts, minimum temperatures are expected to hover between 11°C and 15°C until December 11.

Sridhar remarked, “Residents should expect continued chilly mornings. Conditions may improve slightly after December 11, but winter trends suggest more such spells ahead.”

Citizens brace for continued chill

With the cold spell expected to persist, authorities have advised vulnerable groups, particularly children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, to take precautions during early morning hours. The state may issue further updates as temperatures fluctuate through the week.
