Hyderabad: Telangana is preparing for another spell of cold weather as meteorological authorities have issued a Cold Wave warning for the period between January 5 and January 12.
After a brief easing of winter conditions, temperatures across the state are expected to drop again, matching levels recorded during the December cold wave.
Weather officials indicate that this phase is likely to mark the peak of winter this season, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures remaining lower than usual across several districts.
Day and Night Temperatures to Stay Low
According to meteorological assessments, minimum temperatures are expected to fall to levels similar to the December cold wave, while daytime temperatures will also remain subdued.
“Unlike the previous cold spell, this phase will see reduced temperatures throughout the day,” said meteorologist K. S. Sridhar speaking to NewsMeter. “Maximum temperatures are likely to stay around 25–26 degrees Celsius, which is below the seasonal average.”
The sustained dip in both day and night temperatures is expected to result in prolonged cold conditions across Telangana during the warning period.
Fog and Hazy Conditions Likely
The cold wave is expected to be accompanied by dense fog and persistent haze, particularly during early morning hours.
Telangana has already been witnessing foggy mornings, and weather experts warn that fog intensity may increase during the upcoming spell.
Reduced visibility could affect road travel and daily routines in both urban and rural areas.
Hyderabad Weather: Clear Skies, Cold Mornings
Hyderabad continues to experience mostly clear conditions with sharp temperature variation between day and night, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Current conditions show hazy sunshine during the day, followed by cooler nights.
“Daytime temperatures will remain relatively comfortable, but nights and early mornings will be cold,” said Sridhar.
Today’s Conditions
On January 4, the city recorded hazy sunshine for much of the day, with light surface winds. Overnight temperatures remained significantly lower than afternoon highs, a pattern typical for this time of year.
“Early morning hours will feel colder, particularly in open and low-lying areas,” Sridhar said. “Temperatures could dip close to the mid-teens Celsius before sunrise.”
Short-Term Forecast for Hyderabad
• January 5: Mostly sunny with scattered clouds; maximum around 28°C, minimum near 14°C
• January 6: Predominantly sunny; maximum 28°C, minimum 14°C
• January 7: Hazy sunshine; maximum 27°C, minimum 14°C
• January 8: Partly sunny; maximum 27°C, minimum 13°C
Sridhar said there are no significant weather systems affecting Hyderabad in the coming week, and no rainfall is expected during this period.
Advisory for Residents
The Meteorological Department has advised residents to take precautions, particularly during early morning and late evening hours. Children, the elderly, and people with existing health conditions have been urged to avoid prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.
With calm winds expected, officials also cautioned that air quality issues could persist during morning hours.
Weather Community Flags “Cold Wave 2.0”
Independent weather observer Telangana Weatherman also highlighted the upcoming spell, referring to it as “Cold Wave 2.0” in a tweet.
“Get ready for Cold Wave 2.0 during January 5–12, with temperatures expected to be similar to the December cold wave. This time, day temperatures will also be low (25–26°C), with hazy and foggy weather,” the tweet said.
Outlook
With no immediate relief in sight, winter conditions are expected to remain dominant throughout the week, making January 5–12 one of the coldest stretches of the season in Telangana. Meteorologists said further updates will be issued if weather patterns change.
