Cold wave warning across Telangana: Prolonged chill raises health concerns

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued a cold wave warning for several districts of Telangana, asking residents to prepare for persistently low temperatures over the coming days.

A yellow alert has been sounded in view of the prevailing and expected weather conditions.

Cold wave conditions to persist

According to IMD officials, cold wave conditions are likely to continue across parts of the state for the next few days, with fog or mist expected during early morning hours until December 17.

“Minimum temperatures across Telangana are currently below normal by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in several districts. Cold wave conditions are expected to persist, particularly during night and early morning hours,” said meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter.

8.9 degrees Celsius in Kumuram Bheem

Weather data shows that the Kumuram Bheem district recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 8.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. In Hyderabad, Maredpally was the coldest locality, with temperatures dropping to 13 degrees Celsius.

Temperature trend over the week

IMD officials said there may be a slight increase in night temperatures between December 16 and 18, but overall cold conditions will remain.

“There may be marginal relief in minimum temperatures for two to three days, but this does not indicate the end of winter conditions. Temperatures are expected to drop again thereafter,” Sridhar added.

Weather analyst T Balaji, known for his regional forecasts, has predicted a more intense cold wave between December 19 and 22 across Telangana, including Hyderabad.

Fog likely to cover Hyderabad

For Hyderabad, IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies until December 17, with fog or shallow mist likely during early morning hours.

“Fog formation can reduce visibility, especially between 5 am and 8 am. Commuters are advised to plan travel carefully and avoid speeding,” Sridhar said.

Increased risk of pneumonia due to prolonged cold

Doctors in Hyderabad have reported an increase in viral infections, cough, cold and respiratory illnesses, particularly among children and the elderly.

“We are seeing a rise in viral fevers, bronchitis, and upper respiratory infections due to sudden temperature drops,” said Dr R Suresh, a senior physician at a government hospital in Hyderabad. “Cold weather weakens immunity, making people more susceptible to infections.”

Medical experts have urged senior citizens to be especially cautious, warning of an increased risk of pneumonia during prolonged cold spells.

“Elderly individuals, particularly those with existing lung or heart conditions, are at higher risk of developing pneumonia in cold weather,” said Dr Anitha Rao, a pulmonologist. “They should avoid early morning exposure, stay warm, and seek medical attention if symptoms like breathlessness, fever, or persistent cough appear.”

Advisory for residents

Authorities have advised residents to wear adequate warm clothing, avoid prolonged exposure to cold during early mornings and late nights and ensure proper ventilation indoors.

“With temperatures likely to decline further, people should take preventive health measures seriously,” a health department official said.

The IMD has said it will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as required. Residents are advised to follow official weather advisories and health guidelines over the coming days.
