Hyderabad: Telangana’s Special Chief Secretary (Home), CV Anand, IPS, on Tuesday reviewed the state’s fire and disaster response capabilities during a visit to the Telangana Fire Services Headquarters in Nanakramguda, a stop that officials say marks the first by a top Home Department administrator.

Review of response systems and manpower

Accompanied by senior officials, Anand toured operational units and held discussions on the department’s infrastructure, staffing levels, and technology upgrades. He was also briefed on the financial position and expansion requirements of the State Fire Services and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

The presentation covered the department’s responsibilities under various safety Acts, the addition of new fire stations in growing urban clusters, and the progress made since the formation of Telangana. Officials pointed to rising workloads linked to high-rise development, industrial expansion and recurring urban flooding.

Assurances of government support

In his remarks to staff, Anand acknowledged the scope of emergencies handled every year, from major fires to building collapses and flood rescues.

“The personnel have been responding in some of the most challenging situations. The government will support efforts to enhance readiness and modernise response standards,” he told officers during the review.

Demonstration of equipment

The Special Chief Secretary inspected the Quick Reaction Vehicle and the Multi-Purpose Response Tender, machines designed to navigate tight urban spaces and respond to industrial hazards. Officers demonstrated typical deployment procedures.

Director General Vikram Singh Mann, IPS, said the visit helped spotlight areas where swift approvals could improve public safety.

“This engagement reinforces the need for continued investment in equipment and manpower as the state grows,” Mann noted.

Expanding role beyond fires

Fire officials say their mandate has significantly widened over the past decade, now covering:

• Disaster rescue operations

• Chemical and industrial accidents

• Public safety inspections across commercial infrastructure

• Community education on fire risk

The headquarters teams coordinate closely with district units and municipal authorities during monsoon emergencies.
