Cyberabad cybercrime victims to get back Rs 1.50 crores; 39 cases since January 1

Hyderabad: This year, starting from January 1 to till date, the Cyber Crime Police, Cyberabad, have processed 39 cases for refund of amounts lost by victims of cybercrimes. The Addl Metropolitan Magistrate of Rangareddy district at Kukatpally court has given orders to credit Rs 1,49,41,670 (approx. Rs 1.50 crores) to the accounts of the victims of cybercrime.

One of the first steps in addressing financial crimes should involve recovering the amounts lost by the victims which are put on hold in the suspectā€™s accounts.

While investigation officersā€™ (IOs) primarily focus on investigation and detection, in cybercrime cases, the major challenge is recovery of the amount lost by the victims. However, with many using the 1930 national helpline number and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal to report online financial fraud, there is ample chance of recovering the lost amount that is put on hold in the suspectā€™s account, provided the victim reports the crime immediately.

Refund process

The victim/complainant has to file a petition under Section 457 of CrPC in the jurisdictional court which after taking the IOā€™s opinion and following due procedure passes orders for a refund of the amount put on hold.

After receiving the court order, the IO will inform the banks about the same so that the banks transfer the amount put on hold in the suspectā€™s accounts to the victimā€™s accounts.

The public is urged to be alert to prevent cyber fraud. If they lose money in fraud, immediately report by calling 1930 or visiting the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. This will help the authorities freeze the transactions in multiple layers and put the amounts in the suspectā€™s accounts on hold. The sooner the report comes, the more amount that can be put on hold.
