Hyderabad: Road accidents have increased in the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate jurisdiction this year, even though the fatal crashes have recorded a marginal drop.

Official data revealed that the overall accident burden increased, with non-fatal accidents rising from 2,281 to 2,827, and non-injury accidents climbing from 692 to 978, the CP said.

The fatal crashes, however, came down from 856 in 2024 to 803 in 2025, signalling a marginal improvement in road safety outcomes.

Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians most affected

Elaborating further, Avinash Mohanty said that an analysis of fatal accident victims shows that two-wheeler users continued to be the most vulnerable road users, accounting for over half of the fatalities in both years. Deaths among two-wheeler riders declined from 499 in 2024 to 449 in 2025.

Pedestrian fatalities, however, registered a slight increase from 281 to 285, raising their share of total deaths. Fatalities involving heavy vehicles also rose in 2025, while deaths linked to three-wheelers declined.

Challans

Traffic enforcement in the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate intensified sharply in 2025, with the number of challans issued and penalties collected registering a steep rise compared to the previous year.

Contact challans increased from 6.85 lakh in 2024 to 10.27 lakh in 2025, while e-challans jumped from 15.74 lakh to 25.93 lakh.

Reflecting the stepped-up enforcement, total penalties collected more than doubled, rising from Rs 111.81 crore in 2024 to Rs 239.37 crore in 2025, according to the Annual Crime Report-2025 unveiled by Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty.

Fewer Drunk-Driving and Self-accidents

The CP said that reason-wise analysis points to improvements in certain high-risk behaviours. Self-accidents dropped significantly from 252 cases in 2024 to 177 cases in 2025.

Fatal accidents caused by drunk driving declined from 40 to 24, while those attributed to driving errors also saw a notable reduction.

At the same time, accidents categorised under “other reasons” increased and accounted for nearly two-thirds of fatalities in 2025, indicating the need for deeper analysis of emerging risk factors.

Urban roads and highways under pressure

Avinash Mohanty also said that road-wise data shows that GHMC limits recorded a sharp rise in total accidents, reflecting growing traffic density and urban congestion.

National and State Highways continued to account for a substantial share of fatal accidents, while R&B roads and other roads also witnessed higher accident volumes in 2025.

Fewer DD cases, shift in punishment pattern

The number of dangerous driving (DD) cases booked declined from 18,959 in 2024 to 15,706 in 2025. Disposals were also reduced, and notably, no jail sentences were awarded in 2025, compared to 32 cases in 2024. Enforcement increasingly relied on monetary penalties and social services as corrective measures, he added.

Focus on deterrence and compliance

“The rise in challans and penalty collections to sustained enforcement drives, wider use of technology, and expanded e-challan coverage.

While the decline in fatal accidents offers some relief, the rise in overall crashes highlights the continuing need for better road engineering, stricter compliance, and public awareness to improve traffic safety across the Cyberabad region,” the Cyberabad CP said.
