Hyderabad: In a major initiative to strengthen child safety in schools, the Cyberabad Police have launched School Safety Clubs aimed at safeguarding students from physical, emotional, and digital threats.
The initiative was formally discussed during a high-level meeting held at the Cyberabad Commissionerate, chaired by Madhapur L&O DCP Dr. Vineeth G, IPS.
The meeting brought together school principals, management representatives, and senior police officials to address urgent concerns such as bullying, drug abuse, cyber threats, and sexual harassment within school environments.
Safety clubs to focus on four key areas
Under the new initiative, schools in the Madhapur zone will establish dedicated Safety Clubs that focus on four critical areas including physical safety, cyber safety, drug abuse prevention and mental health support
Each vertical will be led by a trained faculty member and supported by Balamitra teachers, with schools expected to organize regular safety activities and collectively pledge to uphold child protection standards.
Child-centric approach to school safety
Addressing the gathering, DCP Dr. Vineeth G emphasized the importance of involving students in the decision-making process regarding their own safety. He urged schools to adopt a child-centric approach, listen actively to student concerns, and create safe spaces for reporting issues.
Raising concern over a rise in child suicides, bullying incidents, substance abuse, and sexual exploitation in schools, he called for greater awareness and preventive measures. “Perpetrators could be anyone—from staff and students to outsiders and even family members,” he warned.
Zero tolerance for Ragging and Harassment
Schools were instructed to implement a strict zero-tolerance policy against ragging and bullying—whether in person or online. Institutions must establish Anti-Ragging Committees, closely monitor vulnerable areas such as hostels and transport facilities, and provide anonymous complaint mechanisms like drop boxes and helplines.
Legal accountability for drug abuse and sexual offenses
The DCP reiterated that under the NDPS Act, possession or use of drugs on school campuses is a criminal offense. He also stressed that schools and hostels can be held legally accountable if narcotics are found within their premises. Cases involving minors will be addressed under the Juvenile Justice Act, focusing on rehabilitation.
On sexual harassment, he cited the provisions of the POCSO Act, mandating that all school staff report any suspected or disclosed abuse. Failure to do so would result in legal action. Schools are also required to form POCSO Committees, conduct awareness drives, and verify all staff backgrounds.
Spotting the signs and early intervention
Teachers and parents were advised to stay alert for signs such as emotional withdrawal, sudden drops in academic performance, or unexplained injuries. Prompt recognition and timely intervention can be critical in protecting a child from deeper trauma.
Schools must comply with national safety guidelines by drafting School Safety Plans, holding regular PTA and safety committee meetings, training staff, and incorporating safety education into their curriculum.
Cyberabad Police Reinforce Commitment to Child Protection
Speaking at the event, W&CSW DCP Srujana Karnam highlighted the department’s ongoing efforts to protect children through cyber safety training, anti-drug drives, the Suraksha Kavach initiative, and public awareness campaigns.
She urged schools to actively participate in the Safety Clubs initiative and reminded the public about CHILDLINE 1098, a 24x7 toll-free helpline for children in distress.
Addressing Traffic and Campus Safety
Madhapur Traffic DCP Sai Manohar addressed traffic congestion around schools during peak hours. He emphasized the need for visible school zone signage, speed breakers, zebra crossings, and on-ground traffic personnel.
He also called for stringent campus surveillance, proper staff verification, and functional CCTV systems to prevent unauthorized entry and ensure campus safety.
Safe Children, Strong Future
The Cyberabad Police closed the meeting with a reaffirmation of their commitment to child safety. “Safe Children, Strong Future” remains the guiding motto as schools, police, and the community work together to create a secure, abuse-free, and supportive environment for all children.
