Hyderabad: The Cyberabad traffic police have booked over 2,454 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol. As the number of road accidents due to drunk driving have been increasing in the city, the traffic police have started conducting regular checks at various locations across Cyberabad.
The traffic police said all COVID-19 guidelines are being followed while conducting the drunk driving tests.
All those booked for drunk driving under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 are being charge-sheeted and all of them would either have to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 and/or undergo imprisonment of up to six months if it was their first offence or Rs. 15,000 fine and/or imprisonment of up to two years if it was their second or subsequent offence.
Also, the driving licences of all these offenders have been seized and sent to the concerned RTOs for suspension for three months in case of a first offence and permanent revocation in cases of a second or subsequent offence. Further, the employers, educational institutions, and government departments are being intimated about the involvement of their employees or wards in drunk driving incidents.
The police said that any person committing any road traffic accident by driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and causing death of any person (whether travelling in their vehicle or any third-party vehicle) will be booked for 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' under Section 304 part II of the IPC. This will result in imprisonment (simple or rigorous) of up to 10 years.
The Cyberabad traffic police have appealed to the people to not resort to driving under the influence of alcohol. They should make alternative arrangements for their travel after they consume alcohol in any event, it further said.
