Hyderabad: Residents in Hyderabad can expect light to moderate rainfall starting late tonight as Cyclone Montha moves closer to the coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continuous rain through October 28 and 29, accompanied by cloudy skies and cooler temperatures.
“We anticipate intermittent rainfall for the next two days in the city. While conditions will stay damp and windy, extremely heavy downpours are unlikely,” meteorologist KS Sridhar said, speaking to NewsMeter.

Though Hyderabad will face moderate weather changes, several districts are expected to see stronger rain bands as the system intensifies.
From tonight, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Khammam, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, Yadadri-Bhongir and Nagarkurnool may receive moderate to heavy rainfall.
“This is a fast-developing weather system. The shift will be noticeable from tonight as it strengthens further,” Sridhar explained.
Cyclone development and track
Cyclone Montha formed from a weather disturbance over the southeast Bay of Bengal and is currently intensifying while moving northwest.
“The system will deepen into a cyclonic storm by tonight and is likely to cross the coastline on October 28,” Sridhar said.
Rainfall across Telangana will continue until October 29, gradually weakening thereafter.

Government prepares emergency measures
Civil Supplies Minister Capt. N Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageshwara Rao, on Monday held a high-level review meeting in Hyderabad to coordinate emergency measures as Cyclone Montha threatens to bring unseasonal rains across the Telangana state.
Special measures to ensure paddy procurement
The ministers directed officials to remain on high alert and take all necessary steps to ensure that the cyclone does not disrupt the paddy procurement process and the farmers are not affected. Uttam Kumar instructed officials to use tarpaulins to protect paddy already received at procurement centres and to swiftly transport stocks to rice mills.
Officials were asked to work in coordination for the next 30 to 45 days, especially as the cyclone could lead to heavy unseasonal rainfall. He advised that paddy harvesting be temporarily halted in affected areas to prevent crop damage.
So far, the state has procured 1,80,452 metric tonnes of paddy from 22,433 farmers, valued at Rs 431.09 crore. This includes 73,628 metric tonnes of coarse grain and 1,06,824 metric tonnes of fine grain.
