DCA closes two illegal medical shops in Kapra, seizes fake kidney stone cure in Khammam

DCA, Telangana raids 

Hyderabad: Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, conducted raids on two medical shops operating illegally without a drug license at Vampuguda, Kapra, Medchal-Malkajgiri District, and Banda Maisamma Nagar, near Indira Park, Hyderabad and seized the stocks.

In a separate event, DCA seized ā€˜Kondapindi Leaf Powder,ā€™ an Ayurvedic medicine, in Sathupally, Khammam District for making misleading advertisements that it treats ā€˜Kidney Stonesā€™.

Raids on unlicensed medical shops

Officials of the DCA, Quthbullapur Zone, acting on credible information regarding the illegal sale of medicines, raided a medical shop called Sri Sai Bhavani Medical and General Stores, at Krishna Nagar Colony, Vampuguda, Kapra, Medchal-Malkajgiri District, on Wednesday. The medical shop was found to be operating illegally at the said premises without a valid drug licence.

In a separate operation on the same day, DCA officials of Secunderabad Zone, acting on credible information regarding the illegal sale of medicines, raided a medical shop in Banda Maisamma. The clinic was in a community hall, beside Banda Maisamma Temple, Banda Maisamma Nagar, Near Indira Park, Hyderabad. The medical shop was also found to be operating illegally at the said premises without a valid drug licence.

During the two raids, DCA officers detected unauthorized stocking of huge quantities of medicines for sale. A total of 76 varieties of medicines including Antibiotics, Steroids, Antiulcer drugs, IV fluids, Antihypertensive drugs, etc. were found stocked for sale at the said two premises. The officials seized a stock worth Rs 35,000 during the raids.

DCA officers took the samples for analysis. Further investigation shall be carried out and action shall be taken as per the law against all the offenders.

Wholesalers/Dealers who supply medicines to such unlicensed entities, which are stocking and selling drugs without a drug license, are also punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, and stringent action shall be taken against such Wholesalers/Dealers. Wholesalers/Dealers shall mandatorily ensure that the recipient entities hold a valid drug license before supplying medicines to them.

The Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, issues drug licenses for the stocking and selling of medicines in accordance with the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Stocking drugs for sale without a drug license is punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, with imprisonment for up to five years.

Seizure of drugs for misleading advertisements

DCA officials of Khammam Zone detected an ayurvedic medicine ā€˜Kondapindi Leaf Powder,ā€™ being sold in the market with a misleading claim on its label that it treats ā€˜Kidney Stonesā€™ which is a contravention of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. The said ayurvedic medicine was manufactured by Sri Amulya Herbals, Das Street, Bhavanipuram, Vijayawada.

Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 prohibits the advertisement of certain drugs for the treatment of certain diseases and disorders. No person shall take part in the publication of advertisements regarding the diseases/disorders indicated under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

The said ayurvedic medicine was detected by DCA officials at a store in Sathupalli, Khammam District. Stocks were seized during the raid.

Advertisement of a medicine for the treatment of ā€˜Kidney Stonesā€™ is prohibited under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

K Devender Reddy, Drugs Inspector, Khammam Rural carried out the raid. Further investigation shall be carried out and action shall be taken as per the law against all the offenders.

Persons who make misleading advertisements regarding drugs for the treatment of certain diseases and disorders are punishable under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, with imprisonment which may extend to six months, or with a fine, or with both.

The public may report any suspected manufacturing activity related to drugs, including narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, in residential, commercial, or industrial areas, as well as any other complaints regarding illegal activities concerning medicines, through the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana Toll-Free Number 1800-599-6969, which is operational from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm on all working days.
