Death of fish in Chitkul Tank: Telangana HC takes suo motu cognizance; issues notice to CS, others

By Newsmeter Network Published on 2 July 2024 1:55 AM GMTHyderabad: Telangana High Court has issued notice to Chief Secretary, Special Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry Dairy Development and Fisheries department after media reported 10 tonnes of fish died in Chitkul Tank due to the discharge of industrial effluents.
A division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Jukanti Anil Kumar issued notices to the Chief Secretary; Special Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry Dairy Development and Fisheries Department; Principal Secretary, Environment, Forest and Science; Member Secretary, TG Pollution Control Board; District Collector, Pothireddypally, Sangareddy district; Commissioner, Fisheries Department; and Member Secretary, TG Legal Service Authority.
The officers have been directed to file their response within two weeks. The High Court had taken 2 suo motu notice of a newspaper report about the death of 10 tonnes of fish in Chitkul Tank due to the discharge of industrial effluents.
The dead fish were first seen by the local fishermen in that area. The cost of the dead fish was estimated to be Rs. 1 crore. Due to the fish deaths, the livelihood of the nearly 100 fishermen families in Chitkul Village has been hit.
The matter has been adjourned for two weeks.
