Deccan Corporation Inferno: Gutted structure declared unsafe; demolition process started

Hyderabad: Authorities have started demolishing the gutted five-storeyed Deccan Corporation building at Nallagutta, Minister's Road in Secunderabad. The demolition process started on January 26 and it will be completed within a week. A massive fire broke out in the building on January 19. It almost took a day for the firefighters to bring the situation under control.

Authorities are using hydraulic machines and diamond cutters to raze the building. Two days ago, GHMC invited tenders for the demolition of the building. The work was awarded to SK Mallu who quoted the lowest bid. The decision was taken after a committee of structural engineering and JNTU concluded that the building is unsafe and may collapse anytime. The committee included Ramana Rao, Director of NIIT, Warangal.

Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Talasani Srinivas Yadav said, "As the burnt complex is located in a densely populated area, the agency was told to take extra precautionary measures to avoid any untoward incident.ā€ According to the officials, the complete demolition process will have no human interference. It will be carried out using hydraulic breaker machines and diamond cutters.

The hydraulic crusher machine demolishes the building without collapsing and tilting on one side at a time. Starting from the top floors, the 15-member team will first cut the edges, and pillars, and then columns and beams are removed. After the fire incident, the building was completely damaged. Three people have reportedly died in the incident. The remains of one person were found and sent for a DNA test to ascertain his identity. Four people, who were stuck inside the building, were rescued.

An FIR has been registered at Ramgopalpeta police station. Cops have taken building owners, Mohammed Owais, and M.A. Raheem, into custody.
