Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has urged residents to cut water usage by 20% as summer demand rises and groundwater levels fall.

Given the sharp demand, the board has stepped up tanker supply services to address shortages.

March 2026: 2,24,421 tanker trips delivered

April 2026 (till 12): 95,454 tanker trips supplied

Demand surges as Summer intensifies

With temperatures climbing across the city, demand for drinking water has increased sharply. Officials cautioned that declining groundwater levels, coupled with higher consumption, could strain supply in the coming weeks if conservation measures are not adopted immediately.

Tanker operations under review

Managing Director Ashok Reddy, along with Joint Managing Director Mayank Mittal, held a high-level review meeting with senior officials to assess tanker booking, supply, and delivery timelines.

While overall tanker bookings remain largely on par with last year, certain locations have reported a noticeable spike in demand, prompting closer monitoring and operational adjustments.

High-demand areas see spike

Areas such as Manikonda, Banjara Hills, Hafeezpet, and Netaji Park have seen an increase in tanker bookings.

Officials have been directed to:

Clear pending deliveries within two days

Enhance supply at high-demand filling stations

Reallocate tankers from low-demand to high-demand zones

Night supply to reduce pendency

Authorities said that expanding night-time tanker deliveries has helped reduce the backlog significantly. Plans are underway to strengthen night operations further, including incentives for staff if required.

Commercial establishments may also be prioritised for tanker supply during night hours to ease pressure during the day. Officials expressed confidence that deliveries can be completed within 12 hours of booking with these measures.

Call for responsible water use

Emphasising the need for public cooperation, the Water Board urged citizens to adopt simple water-saving habits:

Avoid using drinking water for washing vehicles or premises

Turn off taps while brushing and use a mug

Opt for bucket baths instead of showers

Repair leaking taps and pipelines immediately

Avoid unnecessary storage and wastage

Officials noted that even small changes in daily routines can lead to significant water savings.

Steps to strengthen supply

The Water Board has initiated measures to reinforce the supply system to meet rising summer demand. However, authorities stressed that conservation by residents remains key to preventing a larger crisis.

“Water is a precious resource. Every drop saved today will help secure the future,” officials said.

Officials reiterated that a combination of efficient supply management and responsible public usage will be crucial to tackling Hyderabad’s summer water challenges.
