Hyderabad: A GHMC electric crematorium operator received serious wounds when he was assaulted by a group of people at the Punjagutta Smashana Vatika on Saturday night.

P Mallikarjuna Yadav received severe bleeding injuries on his shoulder and other body parts. He said residents of Devarakonda Basthi opposed the cremation of COVID victims. When he did not give in to their demands, they assaulted him.

He identified some of the assailants as Abdul Wajid, Sagar Babu, Haroon, and others. He lodged a complaint with Banjara Hills police seeking action against them.

Banjara Hills police said P Mallikarjuna Yadav had been working with GHMC on a contract basis as an Operator for the last seven months. His duty was to cremate COVID victims on a daily basis. Sometimes the number was higher than the usual days.

In the process, the residents of Devarakonda Basthi raised objections and asked him to stop cremation. However, he continued to do his work as per the instructions from the civic authorities.

On Saturday, the accused stormed the facility and assaulted him when he was busy cremating the bodies Based on his complaint, a case has been registered under sections 341, 324, 504, 506 of the IPC.
