‘Disco Diwanee..’: From 90’s nostalgia to Regencycore, Xmas decor in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: As the holiday season approaches, homes across India are set to embrace Christmas decor that reflects both tradition and modernity.

From nostalgic simplicity to bold, futuristic statements, the trends for 2024 capture a wide spectrum.

Here’s a look at the key trends shaping this year’s holiday decorations, their inspirations, and their significance, with insights from Hyderabad-based decor experts.

Playful Colors and 90s Nostalgia

2024 is all about bright, youthful energy. The return of bold hues like hot pink, neon green, and vibrant lavenders is a nod to the playful palettes of the 90s. These colors break away from the traditional red-and-green scheme, bringing a festive yet unconventional flair to homes.

Hyderabad-based interior designer Devanshi Mehra notes, “This year, we’re seeing homeowners experiment with neon and pastel combinations for their trees, ornaments, and tableware. It’s a fun way to make holiday decor feel fresh and appealing to younger generations.”

Mehra explains that this boldness also taps into a broader cultural shift. “People are moving toward decorations that celebrate individuality and creativity. It’s less about rigid traditions and more about self-expression,” she says.

The Disco Revival: Chrome-mas Takes Over

The disco trend continues to dominate in 2024, now with a holiday twist. Mirrored surfaces, disco-ball ornaments, and chrome accents are making their way into Indian homes, adding a touch of glam to the festivities.

Daina Roberts, an Etsy trend expert based out of Hyderabad, refers to this as “Chrome-mas,” a natural evolution of summer’s playful Brat Girl aesthetic. “Sleek, futuristic designs combined with shimmering lights create a contemporary yet nostalgic holiday vibe,” she says.

In Hyderabad, home decor stylist Rajat Patel highlights the trend’s versatility: “Disco-inspired elements blend well with minimalist and maximalist styles. We’re seeing mirror-ball baubles used not just on trees but also as table centerpieces and hanging decorations.”

The Regencycore Influence: Decadence Returns

Opulence is making a strong comeback with the rise of Regencycore, a decor style inspired by the lavish aesthetics of the Regency era. Think of rich jewel tones, velvet fabrics, gilded accents, and vintage-inspired elements like mercury glass ornaments.

“Many of my clients are opting for deep blues and burgundies paired with golds to create a regal yet festive atmosphere,” says Mehra. “It’s a beautiful way to bring warmth and sophistication to a home during the holiday season.”

This trend is particularly significant in India, where family gatherings often emphasize grandeur. “The rich textures and layered designs reflect the importance of celebration and togetherness,” she added.

Nature-Inspired Decorations: The Festive Folk Aesthetic

For those seeking a more grounded approach, nature-inspired decor is on the rise. Felt critters, wool stockings, and pinecone ornaments bring a cozy, handmade feel to holiday decorations. This trend resonates with people looking to incorporate sustainability and artisanal charm into their homes.

“Nature-themed decor aligns with the idea of simplicity and mindfulness,” says Roberts. “We’re seeing a lot of demand for hand-painted ceramics and wooden ornaments that celebrate the beauty of traditional craftsmanship.”

“Shoppers are embracing the simplicity of natural elements like mushrooms, feathers, and woodland creatures to create a festive yet calming atmosphere,” she explains.

The Power of Ribbons and Bows

Ribbons and bows are a defining feature of Christmas 2024. From cascading tree toppers to dainty clip-on bows, this trend blends old-fashioned charm with modern convenience.

“Ribbons are timeless, and they work beautifully with both contemporary and traditional setups,” says decor stylist Sana Ali from Hyderabad. “Using velvet or satin bows on trees, mantels, and even dining chairs adds a cohesive touch to any holiday setting.”

This trend also taps into broader cultural movements like Barbiecore and coquette aesthetics, which celebrate femininity and elegance.

Significance of the Trends

Christmas decor trends for 2024 highlight a shift toward personalization and diversity. Whether through playful palettes, vintage luxury, or eco-conscious choices, these styles reflect a deeper need for connection, creativity, and celebration.

As Mehra points out, “The way we decorate our homes for Christmas says a lot about our values and moods. This year, it’s clear that people are embracing joy, individuality, and a sense of community.”

For Indian homes, these trends offer a chance to reinterpret global styles while staying rooted in family traditions. With options ranging from colorful maximalism to regal minimalism, there’s something for everyone to make the season uniquely special.
