Hyderabad: Jakiya Begum, a 47-year-old from Karimnagar, suffered from a congenital lung ailment called pulmonary arteriovenous malformation. It was at an advanced stage and caused breathlessness and frequent tiredness. The woman was admitted to a city hospital when her oxygen concentration fell as low as 45% causing a serious risk to her life.

Dr. Tapaswi Krishna Katragadda, consultant pulmonologist, said, "Oxygen concentration in a normal healthy individual stays around 95-100%, but in this case, it fell to dangerously low levels of just 45%. This was caused due to a congenital problem that led to blood coming in and moving out of the lungs without being purified. With age, the problem aggravated and could have resulted in the loss of life."

She along with Dr. Sridhar Reddy corrected the malformation in the pulmonary artery and vein connection through vascular plugs and coils. This led to oxygen levels in the patient's blood increasing drastically, showing significant signs of improvement. The patient was kept under constant observation and was discharged once she was deemed fully fit to return to her daily routine.

Gaurav Khurana, the CEO of Gleneagles Global Hospital (Lakdikapul), said the procedure demonstrates the super-specialty standards of the hospital and the ability of its doctors to handle any complex health scenario.

The hospital said that this was among the rare cases in which a congenital ailment aggravates and gets detected late.
