Hyderabad: City Police have issued an advisory cautioning young women and their families against marriage fraud. This follows the growing number of marriage fraud cases reported in the city.

Police said `Hyderabad She Teams' have received several complaints about men allegedly exploiting women under the guise of marriage.

City Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar urged victims not to remain silent and assured strict action against offenders.

Fraud under the pretext of marriage

According to police, the accused typically approach families through arranged marriage proposals. After formal meetings and engagement ceremonies, they build trust with the woman and her family.

Using emotional manipulation such as, `we are getting married anyway, what difference does it make now?', the accused allegedly pressured women into physical relationships before marriage. Once their intentions are fulfilled, they reportedly reveal their true motives.

Dowry demands and threats

Police said that in many cases, the accused demand a large sum of money or additional dowry just before the wedding. They threaten to cancel the marriage if their financial demands are not met.

With engagements already announced to relatives and friends, many families hesitate to file complaints, fearing social stigma and damage to reputation. Fraudsters reportedly take advantage of this fear to extort money.

Commissioner Sajjanar warned that remaining silent could lead to lifelong distress and further exploitation.

Advisory to women and families

Police have advised women and parents not to blindly trust proposals, even if they are arranged through elders.

They urged families to:

Verify the groom’s background, behaviour, friends, and habits.

Be cautious if the man insists on private meetings or pressures for physical intimacy before marriage.

Immediately refuse and report any dowry demands or blackmail attempts.

Confidential help available

Victims are encouraged to come forward without fear. Police assured that the complainants’ identities will be kept strictly confidential.
