Hyderabad: Flooding due to dumping of construction and demolition waste says Minister Poonam Prabhakar warns of strict action
Hyderabad: Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has warned of strict action against the people involved in illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste in lakes, ponds, and drainage systems.
Ponnam Prabhakar, who is also in charge of Hyderabad district, said the illegal dumping is the major contributor to urban flooding. He said strict measures will be taken to curb this environmental hazard and protect the city during the monsoon season.
Departments directed to maintain high alert
Ponnam Prabhakar called upon all civic and utility departments to remain vigilant throughout the monsoon period. He ordered the cancellation of holidays for teams involved in emergency response and essential services, ensuring they remain available for immediate action. He also assured his round-the-clock availability to oversee prompt interventions in critical situations.
Progress in drainage and flood mitigation efforts
At a review meeting held at GHMC headquarters, officials briefed the minister on ongoing infrastructure works designed to improve stormwater management.
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan highlighted projects such as the construction of stormwater drains, road repairs, de-silting operations, and the installation of catch pits aimed at enhancing water flow and reducing flood risk.
Sewerage and stormwater systems being upgraded
HMWSSB managing director Ashok Reddy informed the minister about initiatives to separate sewerage channels from stormwater drains. This effort is crucial to preventing overflows and ensuring cleaner drainage during heavy rains.
Promoting rainwater conservation and public awareness
Minister Prabhakar urged GHMC, HMWSSB, and related departments to develop effective water management plans. He stressed the importance of educating citizens on simple rainwater harvesting techniques, such as installing cisterns, to improve groundwater recharge and promote sustainable water use.
Government’s preparedness minimizes monsoon impact
Speaking at a press conference, the minister credited the Telangana government’s proactive measures and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s directives for preventing significant loss of life and property amid recent heavy rainfall.
While acknowledging localized flooding and traffic congestion, he announced plans to formulate a comprehensive master plan to address urban flooding permanently. The meeting was attended by HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath, Traffic Joint CP Joel Davis, zonal commissioners, and other senior officials.
