Extension spree continues: Telangana extends NVS Reddy’s tenure as MD HMRL, HAML for another year

Hyderabad: Telangana government has extended the tenure of NVS Reddy as Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) and Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) for one more year.

His tenure will start from April 1, 2025.

An order to this effect was issued by Principal Secretary (MA&UD) M Dana Kishore.

“In consideration of the fact that the Phase-2 Metro Rail project is at take off stage and the proposals and documentation for Metro Phase-2 (B) is at planning stage, the Government hereby consider it is appropriate to retain the services of NVS Reddy as Managing Director of HMRL and HAML, as he is closely involved in these proposals and retention of his services will help in successful implementation of these projects,” the GO said.

On March 27, the Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MAUD) issued orders terminating 177 retired officers from service, and NVS Reddy is among them. The GO also stated that departments that still require the services of retired officers or employees must obtain fresh approval with justification from the competent authority.

After retiring from his service on June 30, 2016, NVS Reddy was given repeated service extensions during the previous BRS regime, and his current term was set to expire on June 30, 2025. However, the Congress government also issued orders extending his services for one more year, following recommendations from the HMRL MD, citing the critical planning and documentation phase of the Metro Phase-2 and Airport Metro projects.

Since Hyderabad Metro Rail's founding in 2007, NVS Reddy has served as its managing director. Before that, he served as GHMC's additional commissioner for traffic and transportation. After resigning from the IRAS, the officer joined the state government and was appointed a permanent MD.

It is known that the Revanth Reddy government has taken up the second phase of the Metro project with great ambition. As part of the second phase, plans have been prepared to expand the metro service to areas such as Old City, Airport, Fourth City, and North City. In the second phase, 5 corridors have been proposed under Part-A and 3 corridors under Part-B.

The state government had already sent the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 5 corridors in Part-A to the Central Government for approval almost five months ago. The Telangana government is awaiting the permissions from the Centre to start the second phase of the Metro works in Hyderabad, the officials said.
