Flood canal encroachments to illegal occupation of public spaces: HYDRAA receives 26 complaints during Prajavani

Hyderabad: HYDRAA has received multiple complaints about encroachment of drains, flood canals, and government lands, especially during the monsoon.
During HYDRAA’s weekly Prajavani programme, citizens alleged that blocked drains connecting ponds and encroachments on flood canals are leading to rainwater inundation in residential areas. They appealed to HYDRAA authorities to study the catchment areas, restore the original width of drains, and initiate corrective measures.
Out of the 26 petitions received on Monday, most related to illegal occupation of drains, government lands, and public spaces. Additional Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar reviewed the grievances and directed officials concerned to take immediate action.
Key Complaints:
Kukatpally (Hydernagar Division):
The Ramnaresh Nagar Colony Welfare Association reported that the floodwater canal leading to the Alithalab tank is encroached upon at several points, causing waterlogging in nearby houses during heavy rains. They urged the government to remove encroachments, warning that the current drainage system is inadequate during downpours.
Bachupalli Mandal, Medchal (Renuka Yellamma Colony):
Residents complained that a 1,600-square-yard park site and an 800-square-yard open area meant for public use are being encroached upon. Despite repeated appeals, no action has been taken. Locals sought Hydra’s intervention to safeguard community spaces.
Moosapet, Kukatpally Mandal (Anjaiyanagar):
Residents thanked Hydra for clearing earlier encroachments on a local park, but alleged that GHMC has delayed its promised ₹50 lakh development plan. They said the park remains neglected despite funds being sanctioned earlier.
Uppal Mandal (Bandlaguda, Nagole): Citizens alleged that government land in Survey No. 36/6 is being illegally occupied under the guise of Survey No. 35/5, with nearly 3 acres under unauthorized construction. They claimed local authorities are aware but have failed to act, urging Hydra to intervene and protect the land.
