Flooding rears its ugly head again, Traffic chokes Hyderabad roads

Hyderabad: Heavy rainfall in parts of twin cities resulted in flooding of roads on Tuesday. As a result, many roads in Hyderabad witnessed heavy traffic jams since Tuesday morning, resulting in vehicles being stuck for kilometres at a stretch.

Many commuters using the Shaikepet Nala flyover were frustrated with their vehicles being stuck on the flyover for hours. A video went viral which showed the roads overwhelmed with blocked vehicles on the flyover, while the police and the GHMC officials made an effort to clear the traffic.

Police officials on duty in few areas cleared the water logging by removing the clog at drain water.

Flooding brings up waste

A video showed how the drains are clogged with plastic waste and clothes. Several areas saw waste flowing on the roads which came out from the overflowing drains. This has been a similar situation in Hyderabad after every bout of heavy rains. Hyderabad traffic police had to cleared the water logging by removing the clog at drain water.



A big nala passing through Ramgopalpeta, Nallagutta has been flooded. Roads in Quthbullapur, Chintal, Venkteswar Nagar colony, and Jeedimetla bus depot were flooded with rainwater.



Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar gates lifted

Due to the continuing rains, the twin reservoirs Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar came close to their full-water level with substantial flood water. In the wake of the India Meteorological Departmentā€™s (IMD) alert on rains continuing for two more days, the officials of the water board raised the two gates of the twin reservoirs by two feet at 8 am on Tuesday.

A total of 1,373 cusecs of water was released through the two gates of Himayat Sagar and 442 cusecs of water through the two gates of Osman Sagar into the Musi River.

Schools and colleges declared holiday

Following the forecast for heavy rain, the Hyderabad district collector declared a holiday to all educational institutions on Tuesday, even as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) staff are engaged in clearing waterlogging in low-lying areas.

The GHMC commissioner requested people not to step out of their homes unless it is essential for the next few hours as the civic teams of more than 3,000 personnel are on the field to ensure waterlogged areas are cleared across the city.

The IMD Hyderabad said that heavy rainfall would continue in the state until September 7.
