Hyderabad: Infrastructure expansion and congestion management took centre stage during a joint coordination meeting held on Friday between the Cyberabad Traffic Police and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

Officials prioritized constructing new mobility infrastructure, including flyovers, underpasses, free-left lanes, and foot-overbridges, at critical junctions.

Plans also include widening roads and removing unnecessary road dividers to improve vehicle movement and lane discipline across high-density routes.

The Outer Ring Road (ORR), identified as one of the fastest-growing and most burdened traffic zones, will undergo a comprehensive bottleneck mapping exercise to enable targeted engineering solutions and smoother travel.

Focus on Pedestrian and Two-Wheeler Safety

Strengthening pedestrian mobility emerged as a key theme, with proposals for continuous footpaths, skywalks, and dedicated pedestrian crossings at high-traffic points. Officials also discussed creating segregated pathways and safer service roads for two-wheelers to reduce the risks associated with mixed traffic.

Accident-prone ‘black spots’ along ORR and connecting corridors will be rectified through structural redesigns, channelising traffic, improved signage, and lighting.

Technology-driven traffic management

To strengthen enforcement and monitoring, authorities agreed to expand CCTV surveillance at major intersections and vulnerable stretches. Variable Message Signboards (VMS) will also be installed to provide real-time traffic updates to motorists.

Traffic signal optimisation, relocation of outdated signals, and installation of new ones will be undertaken based on current traffic load patterns.

Road repairs and drainage clearance on priority

Pending road repairs, construction of bus bays and shelters, and completion of stormwater drainage systems were flagged as urgent requirements. Officials emphasised regular maintenance to prevent waterlogging and ensure uninterrupted movement during the monsoon season.

Better coordination and timelines

It was decided that periodic review meetings will be held between enforcement and infrastructure departments to ensure timelines are met and resolve any execution hurdles.

The meeting was attended by Madhapur Traffic DCP Sai Manohar, Medchal Traffic DCP Ranjan Ratan Kumar, HGCL GM M. Chandra Sekhar, HMDA SE V.V.S. Apparao, Traffic ADCPs G. Hanmantha Rao and Veeranna, Traffic ACPs from Madhapur, Shamshabad, and Medchal, along with traffic inspectors and officials from HMDA and HGCL.
