Former IAS officer Jannat Hussain passes away in Tirupati district
He served as the principal secretary to former chief ministers Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy and K Rosaiah
By Newsmeter Network Published on 23 Feb 2024 9:33 AM GMTHyderabad: Jannat Hussain (73), a 1977 batch IAS officer, passed away in Sullurpeta of Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Friday. He is survived by a wife and three children.
Hussain was struggling with health issues for the past few years and was staying at his younger sonās house in Sullurpeta. The remains will be taken to Kundanbagh in Hyderabad by tonight, according to Jannatās son Niaz, with final ceremonies scheduled for Saturday.
Hussian was born in a farmerās house in Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh. He was an IAS officer who held several positions before becoming the special chief secretary of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. He served as the principal secretary to former chief ministers Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy and K Rosaiah.
After the 2004 swearing-in event held in LB Stadium, Hussain gained notoriety by going on record accepting YSRās signature on a bill offering farmers free power as principal secretary (Energy Department). He served in the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh in various capacities
Served as RTI chief commissioner
On December 31, 2010, Jannat Hussian retired as special chief secretary in undivided Andhra Pradesh and also served as chief commissioner of Right to Information (RTI) till 2014.
Integrity, honesty, and a practical approach were qualities that made Jannat well-known. With YSR, the chief minister at the time, he was credited with starting several social programs for the underprivileged. Commoners and poor people often approached him in the secretariat with complaints. He then counselled the relevant authorities to address the problems immediately.
To provide four per cent reservations to Muslims in AP, Jannat also collaborated closely with the minority associations.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the demise of Jannat Hussain and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family members.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed grief over the passing away of Jannat Hussain. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family members.
