Former united AP DGP HJ Dora passes away in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Former Director General of Police (DGP) of united Andhra Pradesh HJ Dora passed away on Friday while undergoing treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad.
He had been suffering from kidney-related ailments. He was 82.
According to family sources, Dora had gone to NIMS in the morning for dialysis. After returning home, he reportedly slipped and fell in the bathroom. Family members rushed him back to the hospital, where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.
Early life and education
HJ Dora was born in 1943 in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. He completed his Master’s degree in Economics from Andhra University before joining the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1965.
Distinguished police career
Dora served in the police force for nearly four decades and was widely known for his efforts to curb left-wing extremism and strengthen policing in the state. His contributions significantly helped in reducing violence through effective law enforcement strategies.
In recognition of his distinguished service in maintaining law and order, he was awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry.
After completing IPS training, Dora began his career as Deputy Commissioner of Police in Hyderabad. He later served as Superintendent of Police in Krishna district and gained expertise in handling inter-state and economic crimes during his tenure as SP in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
He also served as Director of the State Intelligence Bureau and Head of the Crime Investigation Department (CID).
Tenure as DGP
HJ Dora was appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh in November 1996. He held the position for more than five years until February 2002, overseeing key law-and-order initiatives and reforms in the state police administration.
Roles after retirement
After retiring as DGP, Dora continued to serve in key national roles. On September 11, 2002, he was appointed as Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). Before that, he also served as the Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
During his tenure in these positions, he worked towards strengthening transparency in governance and combating corruption in public administration.
Author and thought leader
Apart from his policing career, Dora was also a writer. He authored several books, including ‘Impact of Training on the Performance of IPS Officers’ and ‘NTR Tho Nenu.’
He also wrote his autobiography titled ‘Journey Through Turbulent Times,’ reflecting on his experiences in policing and public service.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar, IPS., expressed deep grief over the sudden demise of H. J. Dora, IPS (Retd), former Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh.
In a condolence message, the Commissioner described Dora as one of the finest officers of the Indian Police Service, whose distinguished career and leadership left an indelible mark on policing in the State. A thorough professional and an inspiring leader, he commanded immense respect within the police fraternity and beyond.
