Friday rains disrupt normal life across Telangana; flooded roads, congestion in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Heavy monsoon rains on Friday morning disrupted normal life in multiple parts of Telangana, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic congestion, particularly in Hyderabad.

Dabeerpura in Hyderabad received 28.5 mm

Narva in Narayanpet district recorded the highest rainfall at 44.3 mm between 8:30 am and 11 am, followed closely by Mujahidpur in Vikarabad district with 44 mm, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society.

In Hyderabad, Dabeerpura received 28.5 mm of rain, while Adarshnagar in Qutbullapur recorded 18 mm.

Traffic and commuter challenges

Office-goers faced significant difficulties as several roads in Hyderabad were inundated with water, slowing down traffic across the city.

Heavy waterlogging was reported in low-lying areas, and traffic movement was notably slow along IT corridors in Madhapur and Gachibowli. At Kondapur, vehicles faced delays from Hafeezpet due to heavy traffic flow.

The Cyberabad Traffic Police advised commuters to plan their travel carefully and drive with patience. Traffic staff were deployed at key points, including Masjid Banda, to manage congestion.

Government response

In response to the situation, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed officials to be fully prepared to handle the impact of the rains. He instructed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other civic agencies to address waterlogging and traffic-related issues immediately.

“Collective preparedness and timely action are crucial to ensure safety during such weather events,” a GHMC official said.

Advisories for IT companies and public safety

Cyberabad police issued an advisory to Information Technology companies to consider work-from-home options for employees to reduce traffic congestion.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) highlighted that WFH would help ensure safety, maintain productivity and allow emergency services to operate without interruption.

Impact on air travel

Flight operations at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Shamshabad, were affected due to bad weather. Three IndiGo flights from Kolkata (6E 6623), Mumbai (6E 6148), and Pune (6E 352) were diverted to Vijayawada.

Weather forecast and alerts

Hyderabad and the surrounding areas have experienced moderate rainfall since Thursday night due to a low-pressure system.

The Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across GHMC areas, issuing an orange alert with 50–85 mm rainfall expected in the next 24 hours. Citizens have been advised to avoid low-lying areas, report open manholes or catch pits immediately, and stay clear of electric poles and wires near water.

The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre also warned of thunderstorms with maximum surface wind speeds between 41–61 kmph at isolated places in Hyderabad and adjoining districts of Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri.

The MeT Department further predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanumakonda districts.
