Gas booking fraud alert: Hyderabad CP Sajjanar warns against fake LPG ads offering ‘instant delivery’

Hyderabad: In the wake of rising concerns over domestic LPG cylinder availability, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police VC Sajjanar, IPS, has issued a public advisory warning citizens against a surge in cyber fraud linked to gas bookings.

The Commissioner cautioned that cybercriminals are exploiting fears of a gas shortage by targeting unsuspecting consumers searching online for cylinder bookings.

Scammers are circulating fake advertisements and phishing links, promising immediate delivery or additional cylinders in exchange for advance payments.

Fake ads offering instant delivery

Taking on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Sajjanar said that scammers are posting misleading advertisements on social media platforms claiming urgent cylinder delivery or priority allocation of extra refills upon upfront payment.

“These claims of guaranteed or emergency gas supply against advance online payments are clear signs of cyber fraud,” the Commissioner warned, urging citizens to remain vigilant.

Phishing links circulated via WhatsApp and SMS

Cybercriminals are also sending fake website links through WhatsApp and SMS messages, directing users to fraudulent portals that closely resemble official gas company websites. Once consumers enter their personal or banking details, the information is misused for financial fraud.

The police have strongly advised the public not to click on suspicious links or respond to unsolicited booking messages.

Book only through official LPG companies

Citizens have been advised to book cylinders and make payments strictly through authorised channels of official LPG providers, such as:

- Indian Oil Corporation (Indane LPG)

- Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (Bharatgas)

- Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HP Gas India)

Consumers should use only verified websites, official mobile applications or authorised gas agencies for bookings.

Do not share OTPs or UPI PINs

The Commissioner reiterated that bank account details, OTPs, UPI PINs and debit or credit card information must never be shared with unknown persons, regardless of the urgency or attractiveness of the offer.

Entering such details on fake websites could result in bank accounts being compromised and funds siphoned off by cybercriminals.

Report fraud without delay

Victims of cyber fraud are advised to immediately call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930. Complaints can also be registered online through the official portal, National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Prompt reporting can help authorities freeze fraudulent transactions and improve chances of recovering lost money.

The Hyderabad Police urged residents to stay cautious and verify information before making any online payment related to LPG bookings.
