Hyderabad: Commissioner of Police V.C. Sajjanar has warned the public about a new cyber fraud in which scammers are sending malicious APK files under the pretext of updating gas connection KYC details.

He urged citizens not to click on unknown links or install applications received through WhatsApp or SMS, as such files can give fraudsters full access to their mobile phones and bank accounts.

Fraudsters targeting gas consumers

According to Sajjanar, cyber criminals are posing as representatives of well-known LPG gas companies and contacting consumers over phone calls or messages. They claim that the gas connection details or KYC information must be updated immediately.

The fraudsters then send an APK file through WhatsApp or provide a link via SMS and instruct victims to download and install the application. After installation, the app prompts users to fill in personal and banking details.

However, the application is malicious software designed to steal sensitive data.

Maharashtra case highlights danger

The advisory follows a recent cyber fraud incident reported from Dombivli in Maharashtra, where two women were cheated by cyber criminals using the same method.

The fraudsters called the victims claiming to be from a gas company and convinced them to update their gas connection details. They then sent an APK file via WhatsApp and asked them to download it and fill out a form.

Soon after installing the file and submitting their details, the victims lost nearly ₹4 lakh from their bank accounts.

How malicious APK files work

Cyber experts warn that APK files from unknown sources are highly dangerous. Once installed, these apps can gain remote control of the mobile phone.

They can access SMS messages, capture OTPs, and monitor banking alerts. Using this information, fraudsters can conduct unauthorized transactions and empty bank accounts within minutes.

LPG agencies do not send such files

Sajjanar emphasized that LPG agencies or government departments never send third-party APK files for KYC updates or gas booking.

Consumers should use only official apps or verified websites of gas companies to update their details. Any request asking users to download an APK file should be treated as suspicious.

Steps to take if you fall victim

If someone becomes a victim of such cyber fraud, Sajjanar advised them to act immediately:

Call the national cybercrime helpline 1930

File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal (cybercrime.gov.in)

Inform the bank and block suspicious transactions

Awareness is the best protection

The Hyderabad Police Commissioner urged citizens to remain alert and avoid installing applications sent by unknown sources. He also appealed to the public to share the advisory with family and friends to prevent more people from falling prey to such cyber scams.
