Get ready for a sweltering June

Hyderabad: While people are waiting for the monsoons and a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the heat levels in June 2023 may continue to be above average due to current temperatures being recorded in west Telangana.

For the next three days, the Telangana State Development Planning Society has predicted moderate thundershowers at scattered locations, but this in no way will decrease temperatures permanently.

In the following days, moderate to heavy showers are anticipated across the regions of Bachupally, Gajularamaram, and Jeedimetla, according to weather experts. These showers will serve as a temporary respite from the heat.

Balaji, also known as Telangana Weatherman, tweeted, ā€œUp to May 31, Telangana will have a surge in isolated storms, mostly in the late afternoon and evening. Although they wonā€™t be common, they can offer a momentary reprieve while still maintaining a high level of heat. Next four days in Hyderabad, there is a strong risk of isolated storms.ā€

Why is it so hot in Telangana?

Experts are attributing the harsh temperatures in the state to ecological imbalance, erratic weather systems, and growing carbon footprints.

IMD-Telangana scientist C.A. Sravani said, ā€œAn imbalanced ecological system, particularly the broken water systems, vehicular pollution, and economic development are the major contributors to rising temperature in the city.ā€

She added, ā€œWhat Hyderabad is experiencing now is ā€˜urban heat island effect,ā€™ wherein the high concentration of population and high economic growth and activity is leading to an increase in the average temperature.ā€

Hyderabad weather for next 5 days

Several areas in Telangana may see moderate rainfall, according to the meteorological service. Telangana will see rain for subsequent five days, according to an official announcement from the MET department.

Adilabad, Warangal, Ranga Reddy, and Medak might get some rain. According to the weather service, Telangana will see thunderstorms and lightning in several locations.

Warnings for next few days

29 May: Telangana districts of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Janagaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, and Nagarkurnool have a high likelihood of witnessing storm with lightning, strong winds (40 to 50 kmph), and hailstorms in isolated locations.

It is quite likely that isolated locations in the remaining districts of Telangana may see thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusts as well (40ā€“50 kmph).

30 May to 1 June: Thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds (between 30 and 40 kmph) are quite likely to happen in a few isolated Telangana districts.

Monsoon in June

According to the India Meteorological Departmentā€™s long-range forecast, Telangana is projected to see a period of heavy rain between 7 and 11 June when the Southwest Monsoon arrives.

The period, though, is probably going to be brief because the temperature will soon start to rise. Only by the end of June will the monsoon become more intense in the state.

ā€œThe monsoon is expected to arrive in Telangana between 7 and 11 June. The monsoon will bring heavy rains at first, but after that, they will lessen until picking back up in July, according to IMD-Telangana scientist C.A. Sravani.

According to current predictions, this yearā€™s annual rainfall will be average to below normal following one year of 5% extra precipitation. Telangana had 1,377.5 mm of rainfall this year, which is 52% more than the average of 908.6 mm, according to statistics collected between 1 June 2022 and 27 May 2023.

IMD predicted that this yearā€™s rainfall will range from normal to below normal, with roughly 33% of the state seeing below-average precipitation.

According to the most recent forecasts, Telangana will get normal precipitation with 96-104% of the long-period average (LPA). ā€œEven if there are worries about El Nino, these circumstances wonā€™t significantly affect the rain until the conclusion of the monsoon,ā€ said Sravani.
