Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) collected 88 tonnes of electronic waste during a two-day special e-waste drive that concluded on Tuesday.

The initiative was aimed at the safe disposal of electronic waste while creating awareness about its environmental and health hazards.

The e-waste was collected from 531 locations across the city with the help of 191 dedicated vehicles, according to GHMC officials.

Day-wise collection details

Day 1:

On the first day, the drive was carried out at 271 locations within the GHMC limits. A total of 95 vehicles were deployed, resulting in the collection of 47 tonnes of e-waste.

Day 2:

On the second day, the collection was organised at 260 locations. With 96 vehicles pressed into service, GHMC collected 41 tonnes of electronic waste.

Collected e-waste disposed of at authorised processing units

GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan visited several e-waste collection camps to review on-ground arrangements. He assessed the collection process and ensured that systems were in place for the scientific handling and disposal of electronic waste.

Officials confirmed that all collected e-waste was transported to authorised processing units for safe and scientific disposal.

Focus on public awareness

Apart from collection, the special drive placed strong emphasis on public awareness, educating citizens about the harmful effects of improper disposal of electronic waste and encouraging responsible recycling practices.

The Commissioner thanked Hyderabad residents for their active participation and appreciated the efforts of GHMC officers and field staff for the smooth execution of the drive.

Regular e-waste collection planned

In response to requests from citizens to continue the initiative, the GHMC announced that regular e-waste collection arrangements would be made across the city. An official communication detailing the schedule and mechanism will be issued soon.

Special sanitation drive continues
