GHMC integrates property tax IDs with power connections to curb evasion

Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has linked property tax identification numbers (PTINs) with electricity unique service connections (USCs) of the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGPSPDCL).

The initiative, taken up in collaboration with TGSPDCL and with technical analysis by Soulpage, is expected to significantly increase revenue while improving accountability.

First phase yields matches

In the initial phase, GHMC checked 96,938 residential PTINs. Of these, 22,169 records were successfully matched with power connections through door numbers and property owners’ names.

The exercise also revealed several instances where residential PTINs were tied to commercial electricity connections, indicating tax underpayment.

Residential vs. Commercial misuse

According to officials, door number mapping helped verify whether properties were genuinely residential or commercial. “Some owners have been paying residential tax despite holding commercial power connections. This integration will ensure the right tax is collected,” the GHMC officials said.

Zone-wise coverage

The phase-1 mapping exercise spanned across six GHMC zones:

LB Nagar: 9,761 properties

Charminar: 26,056 properties

Khairatabad: 22,514 properties

Secunderabad: 22,005 properties

Kukatpally: 7,260 properties

Serilingampally: 9,342 properties

Boost to Revenue, Transparency

GHMC Additional Commissioner Anurag Jayanthi said the exercise would play a vital role in expanding the civic body’s revenue base while improving data accuracy and accountability.

He also directed officials to accept applications for advertisement permissions only online, discontinuing the offline system, to promote transparency and efficiency in municipal services.
