GHMC, NCAP roll out citywide plan to curb air pollution in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), in collaboration with the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), has launched a coordinated, citywide approach to improve air quality in Hyderabad through planned action, continuous monitoring and convergence of all concerned departments.

Stating that air quality improvement requires collective action, officials said, “Improving air quality is a shared responsibility.” Under NCAP, all line departments and agencies are working together with clearly defined roles to address pollution sources in a systematic and sustained manner.

Coordinated action across key sectors

As part of the programme, multiple departments are implementing targeted interventions across major pollution sources. The key areas of coordinated action include:

• Hotspot-based assessment of air quality and targeted interventions.

• Road dust control and stricter oversight of construction activities.

• Reduction of vehicular emissions through enforcement and traffic management measures.

• Monitoring of industrial emissions and compliance with environmental norms.

• Regulation and scientific management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste activities.

Officials said the approach focuses on identifying pollution hotspots and addressing them through location-specific measures rather than broad, one-size-fits-all actions.

Way forward

GHMC, along with all line departments, is strengthening inter-departmental coordination, reviewing implementation progress and adopting data-driven strategies to reduce pollution at source.

“The focus is on sustained, long-term improvement in air quality rather than one-time measures,” officials said.

They added that continuous monitoring, regular reviews and convergence of departmental efforts would remain central to the programme’s implementation.

Public health and sustainability focus

Emphasising the larger objective, officials noted that clean air is critical for public health, urban resilience and Hyderabad’s sustainable future.

“Clean air is essential for public health, urban resilience and Hyderabad’s sustainable future,” they said.

The coordinated NCAP-driven effort, officials added, is aimed at ensuring measurable and lasting improvement in the city’s air quality through long-term planning and consistent execution.
