GHMC raids 90 Bakeries in Hyderabad; Food samples sent for lab testing
Hyderabad: In an effort to tighten food safety standards across the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) conducted surprise inspections of bakeries this week through its Food Safety Wing.
A total of 90 bakeries were inspected across different circles by designated Food Safety Officers, as per directives issued by the GHMC Commissioner.
80 Samples Sent for Laboratory Testing
During the operation, officials collected 80 surveillance food samples, which have been forwarded to the State Food Laboratory, Nacharam for analysis. These checks are part of a broader initiative to monitor hygiene conditions and ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and its subsequent rules and regulations.

Dr. Sivaleela, Food Safety Department Telangana, speaking to Newsmeter stated, āThe goal of these inspections is not just punitive action but to promote safe food practices among businesses. Food operators must understand that consumer health is a serious responsibility.ā
Common Violations Noticed
The inspections revealed several recurring lapses in hygiene and food safety standards. GHMC listed the following as the most frequent violations:
1. Non-display of FSSAI licenses at the premises.
2. Missing āBest Beforeā or āUse Byā labels on food items kept in display counters.
3. Open and uncovered dustbins leading to waste exposure.
4. Housefly infestations in preparation and storage areas.
5. Food waste littered on kitchen floors.
6. Lack of updated health records for food handlers and absence of water analysis reports.
7. Food handlers without protective hairnets, posing contamination risks.
Dr. Sivaleela added, āMany of these violations are avoidable and stem from carelessness or lack of awareness. We urge all bakery owners to regularly train their staff, maintain records, and implement basic sanitation measures.ā

Legal Action and Rectification
Food business operators found violating the norms have been issued notices and are required to rectify the observed defects within a stipulated time frame. For serious violations, GHMC has confirmed that cases will be filed before adjudication officers under the applicable food safety regulations.
Officials emphasized that this is part of a routine and ongoing drive to enforce hygiene across all food business establishments in Hyderabad, particularly as consumer footfall increases during the monsoon and festive seasons.
Advisory to Bakeries
GHMC has advised all bakeries and food outlets to:
⢠Clearly label all food items with date of preparation and shelf life.
⢠Display their valid FSSAI license visibly to customers.
⢠Conduct regular pest control and ensure sealed waste disposal.
⢠Maintain hygiene certificates and conduct water quality checks.
āWe are open to guiding businesses on food safety compliance,ā Dr. Sivaleela noted. āBut we will also act firmly against willful negligence.ā
